A child with SCID may need to have a blood, or platelet, transfusion. These treatments are important if recommended by the doctor. Parents must make sure that medical providers know that any blood product that is transfused must first be treated with irradiation to incapacitate donor immune cells and that the donor of the blood should never have had an infection with a virus known as CMV. Infusion of blood in a child with SCID that contains CMV can cause infection that is life-threatening.
